Tips to Prepare for XAT

XAT, or the Xavier Aptitude Test, is slated to be held on 7 January, 2018. If you are keen on appearing for this examination, start with understanding the examination paper pattern. This will help you study in an organized manner.

Divide the Syllabus into Categories

The examination is divided into different sections, namely Quantitative Ability, English Language and Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, General Knowledge, and Essay Writing.

Divide the syllabus into these five categories and then further subdivide it into easy and difficult topics. Focus on the difficult ones first and get them out of the way before studying the easier topics.

Get Your Basics Right

Make sure you have your basics and concepts right. This competitive examination is not like a school exam. Here, your ability to use what you have learnt will be tested. Also, once you thoroughly understand concepts and basics, you will not find the syllabus that difficult.

Be Flexible

The professionals who set the examination are aware that candidates go through past question papers to look for commonalities. That is why the Xavier Aptitude Test always has some new elements every year. This is to test the candidates’ ability to handle change efficiently.

Make sure you have a strategy in place to handle any surprise element in the examination paper. This will help you get over the hurdle and ensure that you can solve the paper with minimal problems. Remember, accuracy is important while answering the examination. Along with that, you should also have confidence in yourself, which will come from preparing well for the examination.

Areas of Focus for the Examination

If you look at past question papers, this examination tests candidates on the following areas:

  • Decision-making skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Taking advantage of one’s strengths

Hence, you should prepare properly in these areas by making sure that you are thorough with the syllabus before the examination date. Also, solve mock question papers once you finish your revision, so you can learn to answer questions correctly within a specific time period. Solving these papers will also let you know about the areas you need to revise a little more.

If you follow these steps, you should have no problem cracking XAT 2018. So, go ahead and begin studying.

All the best!

Smart Tips to Score High in MAT 2017

MAT 2017 will be held on December 3 for candidates who have selected the offline mode, while the online test will be held on December 9, 2017. With the exam just a few months away, you should know how to study well to get a high score.

MAT 2017

Here are a few tips to help you out:

Revise Before the Exam

If you have your fundamentals and concepts in place and you have finished studying the syllabus, focus merely on revising. Do not attempt to study anything new in the eleventh hour, as it will just confuse you and you will begin to panic. Try doing your revision by writing, as it saves time and energy.

Attempt Mock Tests

Practice makes perfect and the same holds true for the MAT exam. Practice as many mock tests as you can. This will not only help you get an insight into the format of the paper, but will also help you judge which topics are your strengths and which topics need more work.

Focus on the Four Main Sections

When calculating your percentile for MAT, the general knowledge section is not taken into account. So, just before the exam, focus on the four most important sections – namely Quantitative Analysis, Logical Reasoning, English Language Comprehension, and Data Interpretation and Sufficiency.

Time Management is the Key

You need to answer 200 questions in 2.5 hours. But remember, there is negative marking for MAT. So, even though you need to solve each question in under a minute, you need to ensure that you are accurate. This is where mock tests will come to your rescue. Set time limits for each section. Suggested section-wise time limits are as follows:

  • English Language Comprehension – 25 minutes
  • Quantitative Analysis – 40 minutes
  • Data Analysis and Sufficiency – 35 minutes
  • Critical Reasoning – 40 minutes
  • General Knowledge – 10 minutes

If you follow these time limits, you should be able to solve all the 200 questions within the allotted time. But, accuracy should not be cast aside, as each incorrect answer will receive 0.25 negative marks. Skip any question you find difficult rather than marking a wrong answer.

There you have it; use these smart tips to help you clear the upcoming MAT 2017 in December.

Essay Writing Tips for Xavier Aptitude Test

Essay Writing Tips for Xavier Aptitude Test

Unlike many other management entrance examinations, Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) has a descriptive essay writing section in Part 2 of the examination paper. Candidates have to write a 200-word descriptive essay within a period of 20 minutes, and they have to make sure that the end result is impressive.

Here are some tips to help you write the essay well to score good marks in this section.

Focus on Structure

Just like you would write essays in school, the one for XAT too should have an introduction where you grab the reader’s attention. It is best to start with a metaphorical story or anecdote as long as it is relevant to the topic.

The body of the essay should have about two paragraphs. The beginning should flow from the introduction while the ending should smoothly guide the reader to the conclusion, which is equally important.

Make sure that the conclusion is in harmony with the rest of the sections and should not be written hastily as it can make or break the essay. Remember, the examiner will read the conclusion and judge your essay based on it.

Use Correct Words and Facts

If you are unsure of the meaning of words, do not use them. To write an essay, it is important you work hard to build up your vocabulary. You can do this by reading editorials, quality newspaper publications, and business magazines. The words you don’t know, just jot them down and check a dictionary for their meanings. Always try and check the context a word can be used in.

Also, mention facts only if you are certain about them. Otherwise, refrain from stating something that is wrong or you are unsure of.

Quick XAT Essay Writing Tips

  • Use paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a different aspect
